  15. <p>     DIED. Thurgood Marshall, 84, retired U.S. Supreme Court
  16. Justice; in Bethesda, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Marshall
  17. graduated first in his class at Howard Law School and sued
  18. successfully to integrate the University of Maryland law school,
  19. which had rejected him because he was black. He won 29 of 32
  20. cases he argued before the Supreme Court, including Brown v.
  21. Board of Education, which declared an end to public school
  22. segregation, and in 1967 he became the Supreme Court's first
  23. black Justice. Marshall was a voice for minorities and women and
  24. an advocate for affirmative action and abortion rights. "I am
  25. not free," he said upon retiring in 1991, having judged a nation
  26. only to find it still wanting.
